Benefits of Dementia Signs

The benefits of dementia signs

Orientation within the home

The world of the person with dementia can be stressful and frustrating. Memory loss, for example, is a particular problem. Even a home in which a person has lived for years can become an unfamiliar place, so the use of special signage can help people with orientation difficulties to find their way more easily around the home.

Improved safety

As the symptoms develop, people with dementia are liable to wander aimlessly In a care home setting it’s important that residents stay safe and are not able to enter unsupervised into areas, such as the kitchen, where they could come to harm.

Greater independence

By guiding residents to the most frequently visited rooms, and most importantly the toilet or bathroom, these signs help to promote independence and self confidence.

Promoting dignity

An en suite toilet too can be more easily recognised if there’s a special high visibility sign on the door and the frame around it is painted a different colour. Experience shows that this combination of prompts frequently provides a valuable reminder when a person with dementia, lying in bed, needs the toilet. Because by the time they get out of bed, the person may have forgotten the urge that triggered the original action, a dementia sign on the toilet door in their bedroom could help them to recall the reason.

Improved well-being

Proper signage, therefore, can help to build their feelings of self esteem, boost confidence and contribute to their general feeling of well being.
